Indie Software
I thought it would be nice to make a small post about the technology we use for Foreign Legion: Buckets of Blood. Since its an indie game, we try to keep the budget low: we don’t use expensive software packages but instead look at open-source software and products targeted at indie developers. Currently we’re using Blender and Unity for developing our game.
Blender is probably the best example of such an open-source product, being just as powerful as other 3D packages while offering many of the same features. Its available for Windows, Mac and Linux completely free, which basically makes Blender the ultimate dream for every indie developer that wants to bring 3D into their games. On top of that, Blender offers its own versatile game engine. While we’re not using the Blender game engine for our current project, its definitely a viable road to travel if your looking for a powerful engine that doesn’t cost a dime. We’ve played around with it ourselves, its great.
As far as game engines are concerned, currently we’re using Unity. While there’s a small price to pay for an indie license, its very intuitive and easy to use. On top of that, its also available for Windows and Mac with the ability to bring your game to even the iPhone or Nintendo Wii. Access to these platforms are great routes for indie developers, both expanding your target audience and hopefully getting your name out there. Something we’re working on ourselves!
Of course there’s a lot of other solutions for indie developers, the ones mentioned here are just some of the tools we’re using right now. Would you like to know more, or do you have a suggestion? Feel free to leave a comment!

I have to totally agree with you. Our studio uses the exact same setup… Blender and Unity. Unity is one of the best engines I’ve ever worked with as an artist.
Looking forward to seeing more!

Hi there, I was wondering how you were exporting models and animations from blender to unity3d and if you had any trouble with this?
